Incredible Etched Topaz Crystal
Topaz is a well-known mineral that occurs in huge, aesthetically pleasing crystals. It occurs naturally in several hues, although seldom in pink, violet, and deep blue. These hues result from the irradiation and heat treatment of stones of lighter hues. When heated, topaz from specific locations may also become pink or colourless. Some Topaz specimens, namely those from Siberia, lose their colour after extended exposure to light.
Topaz crystals in a matrix are extremely rare and highly desirable due to the mineral’s flawless basal cleavage, which leads it to form loose crystals. Pressure or poor faceting can cause a crystal to shatter and become destroyed, thus precautions must be taken to avoid damaging specimens.
NOTEWORTHY LOCALITIES
Brazil contains the most notable topaz reserves. Numerous pegmatite sites in Minas Gerais, Brazil, notably at Itinga and Virgem da Lapa in the Jequitinhonha basin, produce very massive crystals. The famed golden orange-brown Imperial Topaz and pinkish-toned Topaz came from the famous Ouero Prito location in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Mimoso do Sul in Esprito Santo, which has produced very huge crystals, and Brumado in Bahia, which produces exquisite natural pink crystals, are two further Brazilian locations.
Murzinka, Ekaterinburg, in the Ural Mountains of Russia, is the most renowned locale for blue topaz. Transparent and often etched crystals are mined in Volodarsk-Volynskii, Zhytomyr, Ukraine. Topaz mined in Nerchinsk, Transbaikalia, Russia, is multicoloured yellow and blue.
Mogok, Burma’s gem mines produce enormous, transparent and burgundy crystals of varying sizes (Myanmar). Gaoligong Mts, Nujiang, Yunnan Province, China, and Goricho, Ghorkhi massiv, Mongolia have exceptional gem crystals. Pakistan’s Gilgit and Skardu Districts, in Baltistan, are the source of exceptional and voluminous crystals (especially the Shigar Valley, Shengus, and Dassu). Katlung, Khyber, Pakistan is the source of Topaz with a very rich pink and purple hue. Killiecrankie Bay, Flinders Island, Tasmania, Australia is renowned for its white, spherical, water-worn Topaz crystals.
Yellow Topaz crystals formerly originated at Schneckenstein, Klingenthal, Saxony, Germany, whereas odd-shaped radiating microcrystals originated in Germany’s Eifel Mountains. Recently, topaz crystals were discovered at the Strzegon Granite Quarries in Strzegom, Poland. Klein Spitzkopje, in the Erongo Region of Namibia, is the source of pristine, colourless crystals, whereas the St. Anne’s Mine in Mwami, Zimbabwe, is the source of a naturally deep blue Topaz. Jos Plateau, Plateau State, Nigeria, is also a source of excellent topaz crystals.
Tepetate, San Luis Potos, as well as the Veronica Mine, Copetillo, and Villa Garcia, Zacatecas, are well-known locales in Mexico for producing multicoloured topaz with brownish-red hues.
The best and most well-known Topaz occurrence in the United States is the Thomas Range, Juab County, Utah (particularly Topaz Mountain and Maynard’s Claim), where sherry-colored crystals with sharp terminations are connected with a rhyolite matrix. The Zapot Mine, located in Hawethorne, Mineral County, Nevada, is a recent discovery of high-quality topaz crystals. It produces unusual green crystals. The Little Three Mine in Ramona and the Ware Mine in Oak Grove contain topaz pegmatites. Topaz devoid of colour is found in the Pikes Peak region of El Paso County, Colorado, namely at Glen Cove, Devil’s Head, and Crystal Peak. Fine colourless and pale blue tabular crystals are mined in Texas’ Mason County (near Streeter, Katemcy, and Grit). The Tarryall Mts, Park County, Colorado; the Morefield Mine, Winterham, Amelia County, Virginia; Trumbull, Fairfield County, Connecticut; Moat Mountain, Carroll County, New Hampshire; and South Baldface Mountain, Chatham, Carroll County, New Hampshire are more locations.
