Usama Mir accepts three-year T20 contract with Worcestershire

The first year will be the overseas cricket player. He will then be taken as a local
The international career of Pakistan legspinner Usama Mir is to be placed on a longer break as he has agreed a three-year deal in T20 with Worcestershire beginning in 2026. Mir will be an international player until 2027, but in the contract year that will be part of the deal, the player will be regarded as a domestic player.Mir, who is 29 years old can be naturalised in United Kingdom because his wife is a British national. However, he is yet to make a solid announcement regarding his retirement in the Pakistan cricket. He is one of the players who have signed three-year contracts with PCB following long drawn negotiations in 2023 but he was not mentioned in the list of central contracts in the previous year.

That is one of the trends that have seen Mir fall down the pecking order, where he last played international cricket in April 2024. He lost his relations with the board too, as he was compelled not to play in T20-blast after being signed by Worcestershire Rapids last year and there was no NOC granted by the PCB and here they gave their reasons that there was what was terminally known as the PSLL2 policy or playing two foreign Twenty20 leagues over 12 months which could not be breached. Mir has since played T20 leagues in Pakistan and overseas, last year in the Hundred, the BBL, the PSL and previously the Global Super League.

ESPNcricinfo has learned that Mir is planning to stay and play domestic Pakistani cricket in the meantime. Although he has the option to do so over the following two seasons, he will be forced to submit himself as an overseas player in the domestic cricket he participates in Pakistan as of 2027 due to his national status as a local player in the UK.

Although Mir was no consistent in 12 ODI matches and five T20 matches, he has displayed the glimpses of his talent in T20 tournaments. He is currently the PSL 2024 record holder of wicket-takers, and one of the all-time shining stars of all-round in Blast Rapids of 2023. He was the most valuable legspinner in the last BBL season after having turned out the best bowling figures in that league other than Adam Zampa.

Worcestershire CEO Praises Usama Mir

Chief executive Ashley Giles of Worcestershire revealed to the club website that they were excited by the signing.

“He is a very high-quality cricketer capable of making a significant difference of the level at tier-one status,” the Worcestershire CEO said. What is very useful to us, is that his long-term development as a homegrown player in the year 2027 enables us to plan our squads very flexibly and proves to be a sign of our intentions to create a competitive playing staff over a long time span.
