Gemstones: Rocks that are used in jewelry, getic decor and in some cases just for collection. They are colorless as gems, have an array of shapes and sizes and will sparkle when you get light hitting them. However, some gems aren’t created equal. Some precious stones and the other stones are semi precious. These names are sorta cool but they only serve to distinguish the difference in a given gem. It is totally normal for a beginner to be asking themselves what they are all good against. Their color? What about price? Or maybe something else? Now lets delve into this in simple English one step at a time so you have a full understanding of what i am talking about when referring to precious vs semi-precious stones.

What Are Precious Stones?

Precious stones are a special subgroup within gemstones which can be appreciated for ages. This group contains only four gemstones: diamond ruby sapphire and emerald. Hence, this stone is unique in that it is rare, attractive, and durable. Precious is something valuable or very expensive, and the stones are perfect here. They are often seen as superior all gemstones and have been used by kings, queens and rich people for centuries.

    • Diamond:  The toughest gem You need to look at me, all clear and sparkle like rainbows got in tiny dashes Diamonds are so great because they are deep down from the Earth, and it’s hard to find them
    • Ruby:  Cherry or Rose like the colour of cherry RED It is in loving hues and often used in rings or necklaces as a sign of love.
    • Sapphire:  This one is typically blue but sometimes red and called a” sanghra” For all purposes, it is hard lasting jewelry
    • Emerald: This stone is green, like a forest or lime. It’s pretty but can have little cracks inside, which makes it tricky to work with.

What Are Semi-Precious Stones?

Semiprecious Stones is every gemstone in the world and not precious. Semic is Latin for “half” or “unsure” so it comes off as those stones are mild. And in a way, that is. Oftentimes, Semi-precious stones (amethyst, turquoise garnet topaz aquamarine opal) are just as pretty too! Jewelry:

    • Amethyst: This is a purple stone, like grapes or a plum. It’s pretty and not too expensive, so many people like it.
    • Turquoise: purple like grapes or a plum. Quite nice, not to expensive so many individuals like the stone.
    • Garnet: This stone is usually red, but it can be orange or green too. It’s strong and good for everyday wear.
    • Topaz: This can be blue, yellow, or even pink. It’s shiny and bright, making it popular for rings.
    • Aquamarine: This is light blue, like water. It’s calm and lovely, often used in necklaces.
    • Opal: This stone has many colors inside it, like a rainbow. It looks magical when you move it in the light.

There are so many semi-precious stones—hundreds of them! They’re called semi-precious because they’re not as rare as the precious ones, but that doesn’t mean they’re less pretty or useless.

How Did These Names Start?

For a long time, people who studied rocks and gems divided them into two groups: precious and semi-precious. The hardest in those days to get were diamonds rubies sapphires and emeralds so they went down as the “precious” ones. Most of the other “gemstones” like amethyst or garnet (this last one means thousand flowers in Latin so it got to keep its name, but it was still semi-precious at the time) because they were more abundant. As the time was that olden for you if something is rare greater the value and prices as a result these names stuck.

The new generation do not like these names too much. All gemstones are special in their own way, and calling some “semi-precious” just makes them sound less important. But the names are still used because it’s a quick way to talk to someone about gemstones, especially when you just starting.

Let’s explore this topic in easy English, step by step, so you can understand everything about precious and semi-precious stones.

Difference 1: How Rare They Are

Precious and semi precious stones are different in the amount you can find them. Precious stones like diamonds cannot be mass-produced. Tough as Rock: They occur deep down in the Earth where its hot and creates pressure for them to be formed. Ruby, sapphire and emeraldrubye ai blue — they grow only in localities as gems like that found in mines of Africa or Asia. Well if they are not easy to find, they cost more golds. Semi-precious stones (yes, amethyst and turquoise come in all around the world!) Naturally that is okay, i would say. An example of this is in other amethyst, that you can just dig up out of places like Brazil and Russia, and there’s just a lot of it. Not as rare as they are worth less, as a cheaper stone. However sometimes, a really amazing semi-precious stone- sky clean aquamarine ever can still be expensive (just not the perfect one).

Difference 2: How Much They Cost

Precious vs Semi-precious stones: The difference is the priceThese stones differ another way in the way they price. This is the reason why as they are not that rare, they are always going to cost you much less. And price can be a little inconsistent. Semi-precious stones: unfortunately, if they are truly big, extra colorful and extremely difficult specimen it is indeed more expensive than a cloudy small ruby.

I mean semi-precious stones are typically cheaper. You can get an amethyst ring or turquoise necklace for very less than you would a ruby ring. But the cost is variable It can also be way more If semi-precious stone is huge, really white and hard to get in such quality, then it could worth more than a small cloudy ruby. Thus, precious stones usually cost much more but semi-precious stones can actually surprise with value too.

Difference 3: How Hard They Are

A gemstone is classified according to its hardness on the Mohs scale. The scale ranges from one (extremely soft) to ten (extremely hard). The precious stones are pretty hard. I know, it says diamond is the hardest (10) and its the only thing you can scratch. Ruby and sapphire are both 9, which means those aren’t super strong either.

Semi-precious stones vary in their levels of hardness. Topaz is 8, and that’s pretty hard; but opal is only 5.5-6 again so it is quite soft and requires a bit more care. Amethyst and garnet is around 7, a jewelry-friendly range but not very durable like sapphire. So, precious stones tend to be much harder even so there are semi-precious stones that work well—it is not an iron rule.

. semi-precious stones vary in hardness Topaz is 8, which is super hard but opal is only 5-6.5 so it softer and needs more care as well. Sardonyx is particularly strong, with sapphiring up to aiolos 7. Sender: semi-preciousStone eggs a bit stronger?. In contrast precious stones are usually a stronger material, but it does not comply with a steamer outwitting—there are softer semi-precious stones too, which is not a definitely rule at all..

Caring for Them

Precious stones like diamonds and sapphires are tough, so they don’t scratch easily. But emeralds can break because they’re softer and have cracks inside. You clean them with soap and water, but be gentle with emeralds.

Semi-precious stones need care too. Opal is soft, so it can crack if you drop it. Turquoise can change color if it gets wet too much. Amethyst is okay but can fade in the sun. You should keep all gemstones safe and clean them carefully to keep them pretty.
