Jet Jewelry
Jet is a smooth, opaque black gemstone that is immediately identifiable due to its extreme lightness. Jet is composed of carbonized wood (lignite coal). The material was first found near the River Gages and mentioned by Pliny in Ancient Greece. In German, it is still referred to as “Gaget”. Sometimes referred to as “Black Amber” or “Witches Amber”. While an important gemstone of the past, true Jet is rather difficult to find today.
