What Is the Wakhan Corridor, and Which Country Does It Belong To?<\/h4>\n

The Wakhan Corridor is a long and rather narrow strip of territory which is approximately 350 kilometers (220 miles) long in the northeastern Afghanistan.<\/span> Located between Tajikistan to the north, Pakistan to the south and China to the East is a true wonder of geopolitics which emerged from the 19th century struggle between the British and Russian empires known as the Great Game.<\/span> This was formed as the buffer zone between the two powers who\u2019s extremities touched the northeastern China\u2019s Sinkiang province through the Wakshujir pass in Afghanistan\u2019s Badakhshan province.<\/span> Thus, it varies in width and has been described as being as narrow as 13 kilometers (8 miles) and at other times being as wide as 65 kilometers (40 miles).<\/span> Rising to altitudes as high as 4,923 meters or 16,152 feet as at the Wakhjir Pass to get to the northern side over the Pamir mountains and to reach the southern side over the Karakoram range.<\/span> To adventure seekers, the Wakhan is an Afghan land of a different type; it is situated in the territory not visited by wars, and which simply cannot be reached again because it lacks approaches.<\/span> With approximately 17,000 Waddin and Kyrgyz population (as per data from the year 2020), this region is an open history museum of Shaan:mysql Fachan Nomadism at where yaks graze around and where the echoes of old silk trail loud.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can You Visit the Wakhan Corridor?<\/h4>\n

The Chilinji Pass Trek: A Gateway Between Worlds<\/h4>\n

The Chilinji Pass Trek is a crown jewel of adventure in Pakistan, running parallel to the Wakhan Corridor\u2019s southern edge and connecting the Ishkoman Valley (Ghizer District, Gilgit-Baltistan) to the Chapursan Valley (Upper Hunza). At 5,160 meters (16,929 feet), Chilinji Pass isn\u2019t the direct link between Chitral and the Wakhan Corridor\u2014that\u2019s a different pass\u2014but it\u2019s part of a broader network of routes that flirt with this fabled Afghan frontier, offering trekkers a taste of its mystique.<\/p>\n

Starting from Chitral or Mastuj, the trek often begins with a jeep ride to Broghil Valley, near Pakistan\u2019s border with the Wakhan. From there, you\u2019ll cross lush pastures grazed by yaks, skirt the stunning Karambar Lake (4,272 meters), and navigate the Chatoboi Glacier before ascending to Chilinji Pass. The pass itself is a steep, zigzagging climb\u2014expect 7\u20138 hours from the high camp to the top\u2014rewarded by panoramic views of the Hindu Kush and Karakoram ranges. Descending into Chapursan Valley, you\u2019ll pass summer pastures like Beyator and end near Baba Ghundi Ziarat, a Sufi shrine, before driving to Hunza or Gilgit. The full trek takes 12\u201315 days, with 21\u201328 days for a broader itinerary including travel from Islamabad.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a stroll in the park\u2014it\u2019s strenuous, with high altitudes, glacier crossings, and unpredictable weather. What Is the Pass Between Chitral and Wakhan?<\/h4>\n

The direct pass that connects Chitral, Pakistan with Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan is known as Broghil Pass which stands at 3,798meters (12,460 feet).<\/span> Said to be in the Broghil Valley of upper Chitral, it is one of the several historical paths passing through the Hindu Kush into the Afghan territories.<\/span> Now, this road, which was once a strategic trade route of the old Silk Road, is sealed off from legal entries because of the border restrictions; however, its closeness \u2013just fifteen kilometers (nine miles) from Wakhan makes this landmark highly irresistible to hikers.<\/span> The only way to reach Broghil Pass from Pakistan is by a jeep fare to Mastuj to Lashkargaz then to have a trek of 3-4 hours.<\/span> You will mount at the top and look towards the valley of the Oxus ( or Amu Darya River source), but to cross the frontier into Afghanistan is prohibited and permission for this is seldom given.<\/span> For instance, previously explorers such as Wilfred Thesiger (1952) was wonded by the \u201cspace and clearness\u201d or the space in its midst that he compared to Arabia\u2019s desert.<\/span> It is greatly different from Chilinji Pass, located to connect inner valleys and is not a crossing checkpoint to enter the country.<\/span> Other similar ones are linking other areas and they include Shah Jinali which stands towers at 4,215m and Karambar 4,300m both in the extended Wakhan and Chitral link through Broghil though.<\/span> For the adventurers, it seems like one can touch the real historical work climbing on the top of Broghil, though the corridor still seems to be beyond the reach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n
